Sansad Adarsh Gram yojana: Model Villages for Rural Development

The Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) was launched to promote overall development of villages across India. The scheme was introduced on 11 October 2014, marking the birth anniversary of Jayaprakash Narayan. Inspired by the vision of Mahatma Gandhi, the initiative focuses on building clean, self-reliant, and well-developed villages that can serve as models for others.

Under this scheme, every Member of Parliament (MP) adopts a Gram Panchayat and works towards transforming it into an “Adarsh Gram” or model village. The aim is to improve infrastructure, living standards, and overall quality of life while creating a development model that nearby villages can follow. As per the targets, each MP was expected to develop three villages by 2019 and five villages by 2024, ensuring long-term rural development across the country.

Through the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY), Members of Parliament actively work with local communities to plan and support village development. The scheme focuses on inclusive growth, especially helping poor families come out of poverty. Before starting development work, efforts are made to create awareness, encourage community participation, and build a positive environment, with MPs providing leadership and guidance.

At the village level, development planning is done through a participatory approach under the coordination of the District Collector, while MPs act as key facilitators. Various activities such as health camps, grievance support programs, and community engagement initiatives are organized to improve the overall well-being of villagers.

The main goal of SAGY is to provide better basic facilities and improve livelihood opportunities in rural areas. Development work covers important sectors like agriculture, healthcare, sanitation, education, employment, environment, and small-scale industries. The idea is to create model villages that inspire nearby villages to adopt similar development practices.

The Government of India aims to include more than 2,500 villages under this scheme out of nearly 6 lakh villages across the country. This initiative is designed to speed up rural development by promoting strong leadership, community involvement, and sustainable growth.
