Providing quality education for everyone is an important goal under the United Nations Sustainable Development agenda. Education helps people gain knowledge, build skills, find better job opportunities, and live a healthy and respectful life. It also plays a key role in creating a peaceful and successful society.
However, the COVID-19 pandemic has created a serious global education crisis. Education systems across the world were deeply affected, and students faced major disruptions in their learning process. Schools, colleges, and training centers struggled to continue education during this time.
School closures during the pandemic had a strong impact on children’s education and overall well-being. Many students were unable to attend classes for long periods, which affected their learning growth. It is estimated that around 147 million children missed more than half of their classroom education over the past two years, creating a major learning gap.
The impact was even more severe on vulnerable groups such as girls, children from poor families, rural areas, children with disabilities, and minority communities. These challenges may also affect their future income and opportunities. This situation highlights the urgent need to improve access to quality education and ensure that no child is left behind.
Progress toward quality education was already slow before the pandemic, but COVID-19 made the situation much worse. Studies show that learning losses were seen in most countries, affecting students’ knowledge and skills. Without strong action, only a small number of countries will be able to achieve universal secondary education by 2030. It is estimated that around 84 million children and young people may still remain out of school, and nearly 300 million students may lack basic reading, writing, and math skills needed for their future.
In many developing countries, the biggest challenge is the lack of proper funding for education. Low-income and lower-middle-income countries are still facing a huge financial gap when it comes to improving their education systems. This shortage of resources is slowing down progress and limiting access to quality education for millions of children.
To achieve education goals, it is important to make education a top priority at the national level. Governments and organizations must invest more in schools, teachers, and learning systems to ensure better opportunities for every child.
Important steps include making education free and compulsory, increasing the number of trained teachers, improving school infrastructure, and using digital tools for modern learning. These actions are necessary to build a strong education system and ensure that every child gets the chance to learn and succeed.
