Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY): Housing for All

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is a government housing scheme for both urban and rural populations, especially for people living in kutcha houses or without proper shelter. Launched on 25 June 2015, the scheme aims to provide affordable housing loans with interest subsidies and a repayment period of up to 20 years, enabling economically weaker and low-income families to own a permanent home.

The primary objective of PMAY is to ensure that poor and vulnerable families, who have little or no regular source of income and do not own a house, can access safe and durable housing. Under the scheme, the government facilitates low-interest home loans through banks, allowing beneficiaries to convert kutcha houses into pucca houses or construct new ones.

The scheme was implemented in three phases:
  • Phase I: April 2015 to March 2017, covering over 100 cities

  • Phase II: Expanded coverage to more than 200 cities

  • Phase III: April 2019 to March 2022, aimed at completing remaining targets

Eligibility and Key Conditions
  • The applicant’s family must not own a pucca house anywhere in India.

  • The beneficiary must not have received housing assistance under any other government scheme.

  • The carpet area of the house should not exceed 200 square meters.

  • The applicant must have legal ownership of the property.

  • For EWS and LIG categories, annual household income should not exceed ₹6 lakh

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY): Objective

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is a major financial inclusion initiative aimed at bringing economically weaker and marginalized sections into the formal banking system. Many people earlier lacked access to bank accounts and basic banking services.

Under PMJDY, eligible citizens can open a zero-balance bank account, gain access to banking services, and receive benefits such as insurance, pension schemes, and direct benefit transfers (DBT). The scheme plays a crucial role in empowering low-income households by integrating them into India’s financial ecosystem.
